Many of the concert’s performers made their debut at the annual student music competition sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Sudbury.
SUDBURY: More than 200 musicians and singers will perform a special evening of music on Saturday, October 21 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Kiwanis Music Festival of Sudbury.
Many of the concert’s performers made their debut at the annual student music competition which was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Sudbury until it was rebranded in 2021 as the Sudbury Music Festival.
Guest artist violinist Jeremy Bell has performed as soloist with orchestras across North America, and is the curator for the World Concert Artist series at the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ont. He grew up in Sudbury and studied with Metro Kozak, former conductor of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra for eight years.
Other featured guest artists also have Sudbury roots:
· International recording artist Joey Niceforo is an original member of The Canadian Tenors and is now a solo artist;
· Christian Overton is one of the most in-demand trombonists and composers in Toronto;
· Pianist Kassandra-Anne Demers is a Cambrian College alumnus;
· Violist Jamie Arrowsmith is the resident conductor of the Sudbury Symphony and respected string educator;
· Classical guitarist Allan Yzereef is an original member of the Guitars Alive Trio.
Local community ensembles that will delight audiences at the concert include The Bel Canto Chorus, Sudbury Chamber Singers, Young Sudbury Singers, Sudbury Youth Orchestra and Nickel City Wind Ensemble. The concert will also feature other former Kiwanis Music Festival participants, both young and old, in the closing numbers.
“The organizing committee is certain there has never been a concert in Sudbury quite like this one. Our talented musicians are second to none,” says Ralph McIntosh, chair of the Sudbury Music Festival board.
“Many of the Kiwanis Festival’s participants over the years have had successful careers in music, or they have used the discipline they learned as young musicians to become community and business leaders.” He adds, “Everyone is looking forward to seeing old friends. It should be quite the reunion.”
The concert will be held at the Fraser Auditorium at Laurentian University. The Silent Auction will open at 6 pm, and the concert will begin at 7 pm.
Tickets are $30 for adults/seniors and $15 for students and are available on Eventbrite at Gala Concert tickets. Tickets may also be purchased by contacting Ralph McIntosh at mcintor@gmail.com or 705 662 0115.
